Damp, grassy habitats, especially western.

The adult is far less often seen than its familiar caterpillar.

Nor does it eat or drink at all.

Birch woodland.

A beautiful emerald green when fresh, this spectacular moth occasionally flies by day but more often comes to light.

Woodlands, gardens.

The bold and simple patterns make this moth easy to recognise.

The largest of the tiger moths, still common with us but increasingly scarce in England.

Moorland.

This abundant species is well-camouflaged in its heathery habitat. It sometimes flies by day.
