Branch AGM 2009

Highland Branch AGM was held on Saturday 31st October 2009 from 11:00 to 13:00 at Charleston Academy Community Complex, General Booth Road, Inverness, IV3 8ET.

After the AGM, Pete Moore gave a fascinating talk on the Mountain Burnet moth Zygaena exulans.

Pete, an RSPB Warden at Insh Marshes Reserve, is also Vice-county Moth Recorder for East Inverness-shire and has a special interest in Burnet moths.

Mountain Burnet, Zygaena exulans (photo by Pete Moore)When offered a 4-week sabbatical in 2009, Pete chose to spend it in the eastern Cairngorms in June and July, coinciding with the flight period of the Mountain Burnet, whose British distribution is confined to a few colonies in this area. During the first two weeks high pressure prevailed, allowing Pete to observe large numbers of the moth flying at its known sites.

He also established that a colony previously thought extinct was alive and well, and discovered two new colonies.

An intriguing feature of one of the new colonies was its discovery in a new habitat type. Where previous colonies were known to occupy both stunted crowberry heath and also grassland vegetation, this new colony occupied an area of sphagnum and cloudberry.

Unfortunately Pete's search for more new colonies was curtailed when the weather broke at the beginning of July, causing the moths to go to ground. Clearly there are compelling reasons for further research in this area, ideally in sunny weather, during the flight season!
