On 16th July 2011, 20 moth enthusiasts from all over the Highlands (and further afield!) met at Aigas Field Centre to learn more about micro moths, organised by Butterfly Conservation Highland Branch.

The day started with going through half a dozen moth traps which had been put out overnight in the surrounding area. Everyone had a chance to brush up on their id skills with much expert help on hand from Roy Leverton and Mark Young.

Examples of the various micro moths trapped were caught in jars to be examined later. The weather was a bit on the wet side but eventually after a fantastic lunch, we all set off outside to collect micro moths, concentrating on looking at different tree species and trying to master the art of tapping birch branches without getting soaked.

We soon discovered that Scoparia ambigualis was common but found several other species as well. Mark gave many valuable pointers in getting started in identifying micro families and species and inspired new confidence in going out and giving it a try. Thanks to all involved in organising this course - it was a most enjoyable day.
